Thomas P Canty

Mr. Canty concentrates his practice on the U.S. intellectual property needs of European and multinational clients, with an emphasis on patent matters. He frequently evaluates and counsels clients with respect to potential patent infringement situations. He develops strategies for enforcing client patents or for challenging the patents of others, and implements those strategies via negotiation, federal court litigation, and/or use of available PTO procedures.
Mr. Canty also obtains patent rights for clients and advises on patent portfolio development. He has prosecuted patent applications in diverse technical areas before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office resulting in the issuance of hundreds of U.S. patents. In addition to ordinary patent office examination proceedings, he has considerable experience in patent appeals proceedings, as well as reissue and reexamination proceedings.
Mr. Canty’s patent work has involved a wide assortment of technical areas including medical devices, aerospace, optics, chemical processes, telecommunications, robotics, automation, energy production and industrial machinery. Prior to attending law school, he worked in industry for five years as an engineer for an automobile supplier.
He is a resident in Leydig’s Germany office and also speaks German.
