Phillip M. Pippenger

Mr. Pippenger is a member in our Chicago office, and practices exclusively in the area of intellectual property law, with a focus on IP due diligence, patent procurement, patent evaluation, and IP litigation.
Mr. Pippenger has in-depth experience in many areas of technology including:
- Green Technologies -- fuel cell, wind and solar power generation and storage, hybrid power systems
- Nanotechnology involving fullerenes and nanotube technology
- Microfluidics
- MEMS
- Industrial process control devices
- Cellular communications devices and systems
- Solid state devices
- Many other complex computing, electronic, and chemical technologies.
In his time with the firm, Mr. Pippenger has drafted and successfully prosecuted patent applications in all of the foregoing technology areas, as well as other areas. He has also been instrumental in the prosecution of reissue applications, in some cases as applicant's counsel and in others as protestor's counsel, and often assists foreign counsel in non-domestic procurement matters and opposition proceedings.
Having extensive experience in patent evaluation, Mr. Pippenger has rendered numerous opinions and evaluations related to patent validity, enforceability, and infringement, including opinions supporting Rule 11 diligence before filing infringement charges and opinions used as a basis for refuting infringement charges and/or filing successful declaratory judgment actions.
Additionally, Mr. Pippenger has frequently represented clients in intellectual property matters in the Federal Courts, including the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals and numerous District Courts.
As a service to clients involved in mergers, acquisitions, and asset purchases, Mr. Pippenger performs extensive due diligence reviews to support and advise in-house counsel regarding IP portfolio value and IP risks and/or opportunities.
