Mr. Hefner is active in all aspects of intellectual property law, with particular emphasis in patent topics involving biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and the chemical arts. His scientific study employed cellular and molecular techniques to address topics in neurobiology. His professional activities have focused primarily on patent acquisition, intellectual property due diligence, and Hatch-Waxman litigation.

- Abbott Laboratories et al. v. Novopharm, Ltd., C.A. 00-C-5094 (United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois) Represented Novopharm in defense of an action for patent infringement involving fenofibrate. Succeeded in obtaining summary judgment of noninfringement.
- Abbott Laboratories et al. v. Novopharm, Ltd., 02-1387 (United Sates Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit) Represented Novopharm on appeal from favorable summary judgment decision. Succeeded in maintaining judgment of noninfringement.
- Abbott Laboratories et al. v. Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc., C.A. No. 02-1512 (KAJ)(consolidated) (U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware) Represented Teva in defense of action alleging infringement of five patents relating to fenofibrate. Succeeded in obtaining favorable resolution of action
- Bayer Healthcare AG et al. v. Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc., C.A. No. 06-234 (SLR)(consolidated) (U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware) Currently representing Teva in defense of an action for patent infringement involving moxifloxacin.
- Responsible for intellectual property due diligence, investigation, and counseling in many investigations associated with mergers/acquisitions, licensing and other transactions in the life science and pharmaceutical industries. Topics have included patentability, freedom-to-operate, inventorship, ownership, and scope of patent protection.
- Responsible for prosecuting or overseeing hundreds of patent applications worldwide in biotechnology and pharmaceutical sciences.
