Member

Mr. Spina practices law exclusively in the field of intellectual property and is active in all areas of patent law, including legal opinions and counseling, due diligence, prosecution, litigation and licensing, with concentration in the chemical and pharmaceutical fields. Recent technologies with which he has been involved include organic synthesis (including small molecules, polymers and organometallics), new molecules, pharmaceutical compositions, therapeutic indications, cosmetics and inorganic compositions.

With extensive experience in formulating patent strategies and managing patent portfolios, Mr. Spina counsels and renders opinions on patent validity, patent infringement, technology licensing, and the protection of trade secrets and other proprietary information. With an impressive combination of experience in law and industry, he has become invaluable to clients in formulating litigation strategies for defending and enforcing patents in the chemical and pharmaceutical fields, and in rendering advice and opinions on the design of industrially feasible options for avoiding competitors’ patents in those fields. He also prepares and prosecutes patent applications in the U.S. and foreign countries, independently and as part of coordinated efforts on behalf of clients, and has been instrumental in securing patent protection for important technologies in the U.S. and internationally.

Prior to joining Leydig, Voit & Mayer, Mr. Spina was a Senior Chemist at Abbott Laboratories, where for ten years he served as a medicinal chemist in the area of new drug discovery. He is a named inventor on several patents, and coauthored a number of publications relating to medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis.
