Gordon R. Coons

Since joining the firm in 1965, Mr. Coons has been active in all phases of the practice of intellectual property law. He has successfully tried patent cases to a jury and to the court. He is one of only a few active practitioners who have argued a patent case before the Supreme Court of the United States.
While extensively involved in both chemical litigation and complex patent prosecution, Mr. Coons has worked in technologies which include, among others, pharmaceuticals; heat stabilizers for PVC resins; immunoassays; heterogeneous catalysis; agricultural chemicals; polyurethane and other polymer chemistry; silicone and other diverse inorganic as well as organic chemistry; metallurgy, composite materials, ceramics and other material sciences; and plant genetics. He participated as a member of the Board of Managers of the Chicago Patent Law Association from 1987-1989.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Coons practiced as a patent agent for E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. At du Pont, his mentor was C. Marshall Dann, who later served as the Commissioner of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
